A doctor of Chinese medicine, Dr. Janine Mahon first created her Rejuvenating Breast Oil in response to her own health needs. Today, it’s the centerpiece in a line of plant-based formulas designed to nurture a woman’s life force, or Qi, from adolescence through menopause.

What drove you to start your own brand? I’ve always made my own formulas. I didn’t intend to create a line of products until a patient that experienced eight years of breast implant pain, due to a cycling accident, used the Rejuvenating Breast Oil. Her pain resolved itself in 30 days. She ordered a dozen bottles for all of her friends, and I needed a label.
"If there’s something you’re passionate about, notice what it is and fill your life going after it."

What’s your favorite product in the line? The Rejuvenating Breast Oil. I created it 19 years ago, when I was a new mom experiencing mastitis. It’s since been perfected and shared with many of my patients.

What’s your morning routine? Before I open my eyes, I take a few minutes to set my intentions for the day, taking a few deep breaths before I get out of bed. Sometimes I feel the same patterns of stress appear in my mind, and I use these moments to create a new path for the day ahead. I love stepping out into my garden and connecting with all the herbs. I try to aim for 40 minutes of yoga and an early morning hike four times a week up the Sandia Mountains or along the Rio Grande here in New Mexico. For breakfast, I enjoy congee (rice porridge) with savory additions—either almonds, sesame seeds, soft-boiled eggs, green onion, sprouts or something fermented. It’s a very nourishing meal that helps me start my day feeling energized. And water, water, water. Hydration is everything. What would people be surprised to learn about you? I’m an avid salsa dancer. I learned a decade ago, while living with my daughter in Puebla, Mexico. Back when we could go dancing, I would do so three or four times a week. What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting their own business? The journey of entrepreneur ship is one of self-discovery. It’s no easy job, and one that requires you to continually tap into your own power again and again—even when obscured by perceived setbacks. If there’s something you’re passionate about, notice what it is and fill your life going after it. Ask questions and be bold in reaching out to mentors. You don’t always know exactly what your business will look like, and it changes as we discover new parts of ourselves along the way. The adventure is all yours. Dr. Janine Mahon
